Our Instructors

The American Martial Arts Center is blessed with a great staff of black belts all dedicated to the development of our students.  Each and every one of the black belts is nationally and internationally certified by the ITF and USTF.  In addition to their teaching duties each of the black belt instructors attends a weekly black belt staff workout where we review the course curriculum discuss any challenges and ensure that everyone is teaching according to our defined syllabus and the needs of each student is being met.

Kevin A. McDaniel, V Dan & Chief Instructor

Mr. McDaniel has been studying martial arts since 1974.  Starting out in Aikido in which he earned a 2nd dan in 1980, he eventually switched to TaeKwon-Do in 1981 after seeing a demonstration by a local master and being mesmerized by the power of the strikes and majesty of the kicks.  After competing both nationally and internationally throughout the 1980’s Mr. McDaniel had the opportunity to train with Richard Mayo who introduced him to the more traditional ITF style of TaeKwon-Do.  After training with Mr. Mayo for several years Mr. McDaniel attended an ITF summer camp where he met Master Earl Weiss and Grand Master Sereff, whose patience and scientific approach to teaching convinced Mr. McDaniel he had found the right group to learn from.

Mr. McDaniel has operated four TaeKwon-Do schools since opening his first school up in 1985.  In 1997 when he moved back to Madison (Mr. McDaniel grew up in Cottage Grove), Mr. McDaniel opened the current American Martial Arts Center.

Mr. McDaniel’s greatest pleasure (next to playing with his own kids and watching them grow up) is to watch his student’s progress through the ranks, observing them develop their physical skills and blossom into self-confident individuals.

Lily Chang, IV Dan

Ms. Chang has studied jiu-jitsu, kali, several styles of kung-fu and TaeKwon-Do.  Ms. Chang started at the American Martial Arts Center after obtaining her 1st dan from another ITF style school.  She has been with the American Martial Arts Center since 2001.  She brings a great attitude and strong technical knowledge to the school.  Ms. Chang is a certified Cisco Network Engineer by trade with an undergraduate’s degree in physics.

Michael Love, IV Dan

Mr. Love has worked in the computing industry and even for NASA during his information technology career.  Most recently Mr. Love gave up his IT career to pursue his first love, being a flight instructor.  Mr. Love has published three books on flight related topics and is an advanced aerobatics flight instructor.  Mr. Love brings a great personality to the school and is a strong technician who is gifted in his ability to break down complex techniques for our students.  Mr. Love is a founding member of the American Martial Arts Center and started his training with Mr. McDaniel in 1998.

Aric Broeking, II Dan

Mr. Broeking is a graduate of the University of North Dakota and currently works as a senior IT administrator for a large telecommunications company.  Mr. Broeking studied several types of TaeKwon-Do as well as some open systems before joining us as a red belt.  Mr. Broeking is an accomplished sparring competitor and gifted in his ability to work with the kids and adults in our program.  Mr. Broeking has been with the American Martial Arts Center since 2002.

John Hoskins, II Dan

Mr. Hoskins started his martial arts training with the American Martial Arts Center and is one of its original students.  Mr. Hoskins works as an IT Architect for the State of Wisconsin.  Mr. Hoskins loves to teach kids classes and has a gift for breaking down complex movements so even our youngest students understand them.

Beverly Hottman, I Dan

Ms. Hottmann started her martial arts training with the American Martial Arts Center and through hard work and perseverance earned her black belt in just over 3 years.  Ms. Hottmann, in addition to teaching the lunch classes at the school, also serves as the program manager for the AMAC.

Alex Atwell, I Dan

Mr. Atwell transferred to the AMAC over three years ago as a red belt from a previous ITF based school.  When his family moved to Rio several years ago he had to switch schools again due to the distance his family lived from our school.  About 9 months ago Mr. Atwell asked to again study with us, we are extremely honored that he and his family take the over 2 hour round trip twice a week so he can workout with us.  Mr. Atwell is a gifted sparring and patterns competitor and does a wonderful job with the kid gup classes.

Grayson Lins, I Dan

Mr. Lins is the youngest person to date that has gone entirely through the ranks at the AMAC and received their black belt from Mr. McDaniel.  Mr. Lins is a wonderful personality to have in class.  Mr. Lins is a strong technician, an ability that he uses while teaching new techniques to our junior students to great skill.

Dr. John Printen, I Dan

Dr. Printen joined the American Martial Arts Center in 2003 after having studied Kempo and Jujitsu.  Dr. Printen is an accomplished sparring competitor and eager student who is well on the way of becoming a great instructor!
